Working in partnership with environmental charity Hubbub, Mothercare wants shoppers to return old baby clothes for redistribution to those in need
Mothercare, the UK's leading retailer for pregnancy and baby products, has announced a new target to redistribute 65,000 items of baby clothes to more than 6,500 households around the country as part of a major expansion of its circular economy campaign.
Working in collaboration with environmental charity Hubbub, Mothercare said yesterday it would be expanding its 'Gift a Bundle' campaign nationwide to 42 stores in time for Mothers' Day 2018.
The scheme sees customers drop off outgrown baby clothes to participating stores, which are then packaged up and gifted to families in need on Mothers' Day.
The programme launched as a trial in 2016 and expanded to 13 stores last year, which saw around 20,000 items of clothing distributed to 2,000 families.
According to research from Mothercare and Hubbub, 183 million items of outgrown baby clothing are stashed away in UK homes. Bringing these items back into use will help families save money and reduce pressure on the environment, Hubbub founder Trewin Restorick said.
"Hubbub believes that Gift a Bundle is a scalable model that could become an integral part of how Mothers' Day is celebrated in the UK," he said. "We will measure the impact of the campaign in 2018 and explore whether there are other organisations who want to take it over to deliver in future years."
