Company Name: BT

Headquarters: London

Website: www.btplc.com

Headcount: More than 100,000 people

Profile: BT is one of the world's leading communications services companies. It serves the needs of customers in the UK and in 180 countries worldwide.

The BT Group employs more than 100,000 employees. A key part of its workforce includes more than 30,000 field engineers. These field operatives utilise a fleet of many ten thousands cars, vans and specialised vehicles to provide fixed-line, broadband, mobile and TV products and services as well as networked IT services to customers every day.

BT is the largest provider of consumer fixed-line voice and broadband services in the UK, the UK's largest mobile network operator and the second largest pay-TV sports broadcaster in the UK.

The company also provides ICT services to 5,500 multinational companies worldwide and is helping 12 million homes and businesses get ultrafast broadband by 2020.

BT recognised that long-term sustainability is a key consideration for its logistics operations, and has therefore explored the challenges and opportunities of a green logistics approach.

BT's research team has worked in collaboration with Loughborough and Essex Universities to study how CO2 emissions can be efficiently and accurately calculated for its fleet. This has led the company to develop a suite of decision support tools that put CO2 emissions at the heart of the operational decision making process without the need to understand the complex calculations and data of the underlying scientific models.
