US lobby group the Alliance for Climate Protection is to spend $300 million over the next three years on a global warming marketing campaign, according to a report in USA Today.

Founded by former US vice president Al Gore, the Alliance will place advertisements and team up with grass-roots groups to offer US consumers information on what they can do to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

It is also looking to partner with like-minded consumer product manufacturers to spread the word through their packaging, websites and advertising.

An online petition has also been launched at www.wecansolveit.org, calling on “leaders in business and government to solve the climate crisis." At the time of writing, more than 920,000 people had signed up.

The Alliance’s coffers were boosted after Paramount Classics, distributor of Gore's documentary film An Inconvenient Truth donated five per cent of all box office takings to the organisation. Gore also donated his proceeds from the film.

The Alliance for Climate Protection was founded by Gore in 2006 with the mission to “persuade people of the importance, urgency and feasibility of adopting and implementing effective and comprehensive solutions for the climate crisis.”
