Re-use!... And look after your data!
The emphasis in all end of life disposal projects should be on re-use wherever possible - indeed this is the essence of the WEEE Legislation. The manufacturers don't really want your old kit back and would you trust them with your company's data in the first place? Plus - are they secretly charging you for this service through the price of your new kit when you should be actually getting something back for it, or be cost neutral at worse. The key is to find a specialist, secure and ethical IT disposal expert. A company like Tier 1 are accredited to securely wipe data, can re-market your equipment direct to end users (note - avoid those who sell your kit in bulk to trade or even worse, overseas, because you don't get the revenue return you should) and liaise with the IT charities on your behalf if you want to boost your CSR initiatives through charitable donation. You're also given the peace of mind that you're compliant with the rest of the associated legislation, including Data Protection Act, Hazardous Waste Regs and Environmetal Legislation - and it's all documented and certified for when the EA come knocking at your door.... If your equipment can't be re-used, look for someone whose recycling methods are innovative and can provide something back to your staff, local groups or charities. Whatever you do - rememberthat there's no need for anything to go to landfill.
