Now the Tank likes to think we can spot an innovative green product when we see one and discern the exciting, novel, different takes on seemingly unalterable technologies from, well, the normal way of doing things.
Take the energy-saving Levytator escalator for instance, or an electric hearse. Even those herbal "enhancements" we're offered during our infrequent ventures online seem to be breaking down medical – and emotional – barriers.
But surely an all-day breakfast is never going to fit with our vision of a greener future?
So you can imagine how we nearly choked on our cornflakes at the news that "iconic and innovative" restaurant chain – and home of the 24-hour Olympic Breakfast – Little Chef is actually living up to its self-professed status as trail-blazer extrordinaire by installing 126 electric car charging points in its car parks.
By the end of 2012 the Heston Blumenthal-bothering chain aims to fit all of its outlets with 7kW fast chargers from Chargemaster, leaving 90 per cent of the UK within 30 miles of an EV-compatible restaurant.
"I welcome this big thinking from Little Chef," mugged transport minister Norman Baker, "giving a taste of the future [really?! – Ed] in the move towards a first class national recharging network for plug-in cars."
David Densley, head of sustainable transport for SSE, the energy company partnering with Little Chef, couldn't resist joining the gag-fest. "We ... hope it will spark people's interest in electric transport and the environmental benefits it could bring in the future," he chortled.
So next time you're looking to fill up the old electric car, why not tuck into two rashers of back bacon, a pork sausage, two griddled eggs, mushroom, sauté potatoes, griddled tomato and baked beans at your local Little Chef? It's served all day and you've even got a choice of toast or fried bread. And at only £7.49, we're sure you'll be a very happy green eater.
