At least three similar devices which promise to eliminate household standby power waste will hit the shops this summer.
The adapters cut the power to consumer electronics products left on standby, but still enable the devices to be switched on and off using a remote control.
First out of the blocks is SMJ's Energy Saving Plug Adaptor from high-street retailer Currys. The £9.99 product has been approved by the Energy Saving Trust.
Electratech's Savasocket, a multi-way bank of sockets, and a similar device from EcoTech, which featured in the BBC's Dragons Den, are also set to launch this summer.
All five Dragons promised to invest in the EcoTech product demonstrated by Ecotech founders Peter Ensinger and David Baker, but only if their patent stood up to close scrutiny. It did not, and the Dragons pulled out.
However, Ensinger claimed that his company has since struck a deal with another investor.
The UK government estimates that leaving household electrical devices on standby results in 800,000 tons of carbon emissions each year, and costs consumers £660m a year in electricity charges.
