A joint report from Defra and the Department for Business (BIS) aims to encourage British firms to capitalise on recycling and waste and resource management opportunities, largely created by the regulatory environment in the UK.
“We have identified opportunities for British businesses across the supply chain, from product design and manufacture, through to management, recovery and re-use of materials. In all of these areas, economic and environmental benefits go together,” reads the report, Less is more: Business Opportunities in Waste & Resource Management.
The intention is to foster economic growth in these areas and support UK businesses in creating jobs in the waste management and recycling sector. The report is one of four pilot projects promised in the Government’s New Industry, New Jobs report of April 2009, which called for closer collaboration between government departments, more open discussions with business, and a focus on identifying the opportunities for British business in government policy.
“There are real opportunities for British companies who can lead the way in innovative product design and supply systems,” said environment minister Hilary Benn. “We need to be smarter about re-using and recycling waste, getting the full value from our resources rather than simply dumping it in landfill.”
