Counting the CO2 hidden in H2O

The water industry is to get guidance in estimating the CO2 cost of its operations

Andrew Charlesworth, BusinessGreen 27 Mar 2008

The UK water industry is to get a carbon calculator to measure the amount of CO2 expended in the treatment and delivery of water.

Developed by engineering consultancy MWH, the calculator will help industry body UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR) draw up carbon-reduction guidance for water companies.

The system will allow water companies to calculate the amount of “embodied” carbon used in water treatment plants and similar new projects. It will also help UKWIR and UK water industry regulator Ofwat set a price for embodied carbon, enabling companies to assess the value of investing in new projects.
